What are they using you aren't? 

The Five Parts to a Sale, my complete sales training process which is:

  • #1 The Greeting. We greet people like they are coming to our home; friendly, promptly and positive.
  • #2 Windows of Contact. We notice the person in front of us as unique and special then share something about ourselves before
    ever "pitching" a product or service.
  • #3 THE Question. To begin to focus from large to small, we use one question that can't be answered with "yes" or "no."
  • #4 Features & Benefits. This is where we point out a specific feature of a product and why it is important to the customer.
  • #5 Closing with an add-on. We paint a picture of something so well, the customer allows themselves to splurge.

I've spent a lifetime perfecting this system through my experiences with restaurants,  jewelry stores, selling shoes, outfitting urban cowboys, selling hotel rooms, selling coffee and beating the bushes for donors to a non-profit.  It works anywhere.

I constantly worked to make it easy to teach, understand and increase sales.  Now I have a new way for you to teach it, the HUDDLE program.

Huddle is a football term that means: A brief gathering of a team's players behind the line of scrimmage to receive instructions for the next play.  For our purposes it stands for "Help Understand, Develop, Direct and Lead Everyone."

The HUDDLE can be quickly delivered in just 5 - 15 minutes.  It is a one, two or three page script of training the Five Parts to a Successful Sale in bite-size segments you can put into practice right away.

What you will receive each week for 12 weeks:
  • All the information you need, nothing to forget because it is written down.  This helps you conduct the same HUDDLE multiple times so the information is consistent each time.  One of the frequent problems we face in training new behaviors is that we leave out key components, which can make the difference between "I get it!" and "huh?"
  • The script of exactly what to say to trainees with an explanation of what correct answers would look like to any questions posed.
  • An exercise to reinforce the training.
  • One easy, bite-size point that builds on the previous learning each week.
  • Verification at the end so all team members acknowledge they understand what to do.

The HUDDLE program gets their attention, tells them exactly what you are going to cover, provides the learning and let's them practice.

Can't I just get all 12 at once?

From nearly thirty years in retail I know that most people would hand them to an employee who would skip through the lessons, "got it, got it, got it, got it, etc."  When the frustrated manager confronted them later that they weren't doing any of it, the employee would say, "I just forgot."  That's because they didn't have a chance to practice the new learning, they just scanned it.

For true understanding to take place, you need to master each step.  We don't teach a three year old math because they have to know what a number is, before they can add and subtract.

How does it work?

With the HUDDLE system, you introduce the concept at your regular Saturday morning meeting or one-on-one.  Working with your team members, you are able to coach them to master the one bite-size piece of training for the week. Every seven days a new HUDDLE arrives via email to build on the previous lesson. If employees can't master it, you can have a conversation about what your expectations are for them.

You might be thinking, "I don't think anything will work in this economy."  Well there are consequences of not training your crew how to sell:

  1. Piles of unsold merch - that's your money sitting there
  2. Discounts that just don't end - at times begging people to take the stuff away.
  3. Higher turnover of employees because the best leave.
  4. Competitors stealing your best customers.

  5. HUDDLE #5 - The Greeting - What to say when you follow-up with the browser instead of "Finding everything ok?" Maybe a store tour would be appropriate.
  6. HUDDLE #6- Windows of Contact - How to find one thing you can comment on
  7. HUDDLE #7- Windows of Contact - How to look inside at something you have in common
  8. HUDDLE #8- Windows of Contact - How to be comfortable sharing yourself with others HUDDLE #9- Windows of Contact - What kinds of questions to ask to help funnel customer choices down to a few.
  9. HUDDLE #10- Features - What are they and how do you find them
  10. HUDDLE #11- Benefits - The link to features is easy, once you know how
  11. HUDDLE #12 - Closing - How to paint a picture so well, the customer sees the benefits of the add-on you suggest.

To me, it makes no sense to "try" and make sales. Why continue to waste your time on "trying" when there is a proven way to build sales that really, really works?
